Agents of Change in the existing Kapiti housing market,
creating viable alternatives for affordable rentals
The Big Questions - trying to be answered by us!
Homes for Good Trust only became inaugurated in October 2024 and already at March 2025 we have held 2 Public Meetings with about 80 people coming to tell us of their housing issues in this exceedingly difficult market. In addition we have joined the peak body- Community Housing Aotearoa so we can join with them as a voice to Council and the Government about what needs to change- FAST, in order that our older people can have safe, secure, suitable housing.
We have been assisted by a small set up grant from KCDC for some of our workplan, which is, at present, solely focused on the housing needs of over 65s in Central Kapiti. This area has a high proportion of over 65s in the population and many of them are finding themselves shut out of the rental market, because of many life factors that have brought them to this point.
The questions we are trying to answer in the first year of our operation are:
Who else is helping over 65s deal with their long term housing needs and options?
What types of help do people need?
What is the size of the over 65s accommodation issue here and what are the trends?
What are all the possible, viable housing options that could be explored and perhaps developed in the future to meet these needs?
On our ever changing website you can hope to see current research reports appertaining to the issues, sections on Affordable Rentals, Home sharing experiences and related initiatives, "Granny Flat" opportunities in the District as well as trialing a place for people over 65 to safely and anonymously advertise for urgent accommodation needs, and for those offering possible solutions. We will also post surveys into relevant topics like Holiday Homes in Central Kapiti to see if they could offer any answer to our acute housing needs.
We value your input on these big questions to guide what we put our energies into. Contact Us
