What sort of housing do older people actually want?
Some research done by CRESA, as part of the National Science Challenge in 2021, reviewed all the research done on needs of older people regarding their housing: It found that older people want accessible and smaller homes. Across the studies the most important features of the home for older people are:
o Easy maintenance of home and section
o Accessible features
o Warmth
o Home-ownership tenure
o Physical environment
o Access to services
o Provision of services to assist people to ‘age in place’ in their own homes o Safety
o Affordability
o Space for visitors, family, and hobbies.

The Fear of Running Out of savings (FORO) - a real issue for over 65s
In Massey University's latest Retirement Expenditure Guidelines Report found below:
https://www.massey.ac.nz/documents/2145/new-zealand-retirement-expenditure-guidelines-2024.pdf
it states:
• In retirement planning, ‘fear of running out’ (FORO) may lead to over-saving thereby reducing one’s quality of life, while in retirement it may cause under-spending even when sufficient funds are available.
• Underpinning this FORO is the uncertainty around life span —essentially, the question of life expectancy or simply, “How long will I live?”, which is a question that no-one can answer with certainty.
Read the report and see where you stand against the well presented and updated data.
