What is an Affordable Rental?
This is a very debatable and often very personal topic but within the Community Housing sector, of which Homes for Good is a small part, there are 2 distinct definitions:
The Ministry of Social Development helps people who have affordability issues with their rent and uses a guideline that no more than 25% of gross income of a household should be spent on rent.
Community Housing providers, trying to offer affordable rentals to households, generally use the principle of setting their rents at 80% of the median rents being charged tenants as published for that area regularly by the Tenancy Tribunal.
In this section we will try to bring together information and tools that are helpful to those pensioners trying to navigate this extremely vexing issue of finding rental accommodation that they can afford, here in Central Kapiti. Try our affordable rent calculator, we hope you find it useful. Read Mary's story below and if you would like to share your journey of renting in this area please contact us at info@homesforgood.nz.
