Safe, secure, sustainable housing is a basic human right
The Human Rights Tribunal in Aotearoa says:
" Everyone has the right to a decent home. A decent home is safe, warm, dry, affordable, accessible and culturally adequate. It is supported by necessary infrastructure such as water, and accessible to key services and facilities such as education, health providers, and community. Decent housing improves health, education, and work. It provides a sense of safety and belonging. Without a decent home, it is difficult to contribute to society. Because housing is so vital to our mana and wellbeing, it is a human right."
Our Trustees currently are:
Chairman
" I am a retired senior teacher of English, now committing my time to aiding the community here in Kapiti through this new community housing venture, through social investment in the work of He Tangata Village and in the leadership of the local chapter of St. Vincent de Paul (Vinnies)."
Secretary/Treasurer
" I am a retired management consultant with a passion for good quality housing for everyone. I have been both in leadership and support of many differing groups dealing with housing at both a national and local level. I was recently recognised by KCDC for my conservation efforts in the wider community."
Trustee
" I am a retired registered nurse and a tertiary lecturer. Through my nursing practice I have worked in the community seeing first hand some of the housing that people live in and I know through teaching nursing students that housing is one of the main determinants of health. Healthy, safe, warm and dry housing contributes to healthy people. With our aging population, and many more people over 65 with housing needs living in our community, I want to work with the rest of our team to raise awareness of these housing needs and look at how we can provide more long term solutions."
Trustee
"For me as a renter, the biggest challenge has been finding security of tenure, a “forever home”, in a market where a long term generally means a one-year lease. Moving house frequently is particularly tough on Seniors and can be tough on their finances and possessions too.
This makes me an enthusiast for Homes for Good, and the opportunity to help bring about change in housing options for Kapiti Seniors. As a retiree, I very much welcome the opportunity to contribute my lived experience and skills in management and governance."
